Elder Care And A Daily Routine Can Reduce Stress In Seniors

Sep 15, 2017 by Garrett Sullivan

Stress in seniors is not good and it can lead to health problems and even feelings of isolation as your loved one may want to just stay indoors. A daily routine can help eliminate the element of surprise and reduce stress that your loved one may feel from surprises and unexpected events. Elder care services can help to create a daily routine for your loved one and while not all unexpected situations can be avoided, they can be accommodated and adjusted for. Controlling the areas that we do know about can help make it easier when something unexpected does pop up.

Your loved one may be in need of a daily routine and their elder care provider is one of the best people to talk to about creating one. After all, the elder care provider is with your loved one and knows what activities need to be completed and when. Without a daily schedule or routine, your parent may become overwhelmed too.

A daily routine or schedule does not have to be broken down into time slots and you do not have to push your loved one to perform activities by a certain time, but simply create a game plan of what the day holds.

For example, consider this routine:

  • Wake up, brush teeth, and get dressed
  • Sit down and read the paper while eating breakfast
  • Discuss the current events over some coffee
  • Take some time to create a craft, play a puzzle, or read
  • Quiet time
  • Clean up around the house
  • Take a walk or exercise

As you can see, there are no specific time slots, but there is a general idea of what to do. Your loved one’s elder care specialist can help guide and create the plan based on your loved one’s needs too. For example, if your loved one has a doctor’s appointment, they can work that into the schedule or if your loved one needs to have dressing changed on a wound, that can be added to the schedule.
